How much do you need before you can stop working?
FIRE numbers, savings habits, and the Malaysian reality of early retirement.
FIRE — financial independence, retire early — sounds like a Silicon Valley meme. In Malaysia it usually means a quieter question: how much do I need before work becomes optional?
Start with annual spending
Your number isn't a blog post's round figure. It's roughly 25 times what you actually spend in a year — adjusted for EPF at 55, medical inflation, and whether you still carry a mortgage.
The Malaysian reality
Most people won't retire at 35. But knowing the number changes behaviour today: how aggressively you pay debt, how much you keep in ringgit vs abroad, and whether your spouse shares the same target.
