Family money

From drowning in debt to coaching others out

A former banker on what it actually takes to climb out — and stay out.

Editor's note: This story draws on a conversation from Di Sebalik Sampul. Names and details have been changed.

Until 44, I never had a savings account. I'd always been under the gun. I'd always owed money.

Anthony Bourdain

Ahmad spent fifteen years in banking before the numbers on his own statements stopped making sense. He wasn't bad with money in the abstract — he could explain compound interest to clients — but at home, debt had become the background noise of every month.

By his mid-thirties, he owed on three credit cards, a personal loan, and a car he could barely afford. Minimum payments kept the banks quiet. They didn't keep him free.

The month everything tipped

The turning point wasn't dramatic. It was a RM 47 shortfall on a school-fees transfer — enough to trigger a late fee, which rolled into the next cycle, which meant another minimum payment he couldn't cover without borrowing from somewhere else.

He sat at the kitchen table after the kids were asleep and added it up properly for the first time: RM 84,000 across every line of credit, not counting the hire purchase. The interest alone was more than his groceries.

What actually worked

Ahmad's recovery wasn't a single hack. It was a sequence of boring decisions, repeated until the balance moved.

  • One list of every debt — balance, rate, minimum — no guessing.
  • Smallest balance first for momentum, then highest rate for the long tail.
  • A separate account for bills only, funded on payday before anything else.
  • No new credit for eighteen months — including the cards he kept for emergencies.
  • A monthly check-in with his spouse, so spending wasn't a solo sport.

Staying out

Paying debt off is a sprint. Staying out is the part nobody posts about. Ahmad now coaches others through the same climb — not as a guru, but as someone who remembers what RM 47 feels like when you're already stretched.

If you're in it right now: you don't need a side business or a lottery ticket. You need one honest number, one order of attack, and enough time to let the compounding work in your favour for once.
